[Gig’s Corner] The New Romantics + Link Up

Gigi Kiersten wearing a rose pink colored plus size cold shoulder ruffled dress from Charlotte Russe.

This year I was in the mood to do something for because I was in the mood to wear something for soft and feminine.  As for Valentine’s day itself, as someone who as identifies as Aromantic and literally has zero personal interest in being in a relationship ever I’m a little ambivalent about it.

I’m not ashamed or sad about it, I think as a single woman over the age of thirty you are looked upon as a sad immature woman who will be alone with her army of cats.  I hate to get feminist on you, but that shit is complete and utter bullshit. There are plenty of happy women who never got married, like Coco Chanel who basically revolutionized the fashion industry and women’s clothing forever.

Don’t feel sorry for me, because the way I feel about my Aromanticism is that similar to some people loving Strawberry Ice Cream, and me hating it.  In the end, it’s just a different point of view. I don’t think I’m lacking in love either. I love my parents, I love my children, and I love my friends. I don’t think that type of love is better or worse than a romantic love, it’s just different.

The crazy thing is that I love romance.  I had a horrible addiction to Harlequin romance novels in my teens and early twenties, I love a good romantic comedy here or there. I love watching two people fall in love and get together. Even though I’m personally aromantic, I still find a couple in love beautiful to watch. I just know that is just not in the cards for me.

For me, Valentine’s day is a day to celebrate ALL love, not just romantic love. Valentine’s day is a day to celebrate the people in my life and show them how much I appreciate them.  I love to send my friends Valentine’s cards (although I have been lazy about it in recent years), buy cutesie gifts for my parents, and buy a box of chocolate for the kids.

So if you are single, and you are feeling sorry for yourself (and believe me I have spent more than my fair share of Valentine’s day like that) then stop, look around all the people you love, and appreciate them that they are there. If you are not Aromantic like me, then you will one day find the love you been waiting for.

Yet my advice is that you don’t waste your time searching for the one, live your life in the moment, and one day you will meet them.   However, don’t forget to appreciate the now, and the people you already love that is in your life.

For the outfit in these photos, I decided to wear my very pretty plus size cold shoulder ruffle dress from Charlotte Russe.  I know that people are complaining that cold shoulders are totally over, but I will wear this trend until the wheels come off, ya’ll!

Also, the ruffles and the mauve color of this plus size dress is super feminine and perfect for Valentine’s day. It’s also a bit sexy, without being way too sexy, which is completely in my wheelhouse.

If you follow me on Instagram (and you totally should) then you have seen these pair of super cute brown leather wedges that I bought from Payless. I think they are sold out, so I found these similar brown leather wedges. This color brown is a softer alternative to a black and really adds to soft feminine overall look I was going for.

Then finally, I added this pop of bold pink with this vintage patent leather Sasha handbag.  I love this bag and I got as a gift, but of course, I couldn’t find anywhere so I found this awesome bright pink patent leather bag set on eBay. As for the jewelry, the costume jewelry is from my mom’s collection as always.  I went with red, pink, and tones. My favorite is the roses bracelet.

And that’s my outfit for Valentine’s day. What do you guys think? Love it or hate it? Let me know down in the comments!

  1. Omg ! You look for pretty. I love your dress ,, your hair, shoes everything! So beautiful. Girl I’m out of words lol! I want to explain better. The photo itself looks so romantic lol. You did an awesome job taking your photo and I had to save the dress you’re wearing, what a deal! and that bag nd shoes go beautifully with it. Loves loves! awesome post:)

    1. Thanks, Trina! I love this outfit too. The dress was a steal and I got it on sale along with the black jumper you saw me on Instagram. Speaking of sales, I suggest you use the honey extension to save money at Payless. I think they have a sale going on, but with that extension, you can save even more.

  2. Gigi, I so love this pink on you! You are rocking the cold shoulder trend and you should keep rocking it until the wheels fall off! (I love that phrase. It made me giggle!) And kudos to you for loving yourself and celebrating that kind of love this Valentine’s Day because self-love really is the most important love there is. How can we love anyone else or let ourselves be loved in a real and genuine manner if we can’t love ourselves? This is in no way relevant to your life, but it is my love story so I’mm gonna share it! When I was 34 and feeling so sorry for myself and my alone-ness, I remember my sister telling me, “Once you get comfortable with yourself and being alone. Like really, truly comfortable with it all. Things will change.” And I remember the moment of clarity when I hit that point. I was sitting alone in my room in my tiny little apartment and I had this feeling of complete peace wash over me. And I was really okay with myself and my place in life and being single forever. Two weeks later to the day, I met my husband and he won me over like no other. And history was made. And I am still really okay with myself and my place in life and I can’t imagine how I could ever be happier. So keep loving yourself, my beautiful friend, and you will always find happiness.

    1. Hi, Shelbee! Thank you so much for dropping by. Your love story is so inspirational. Seriously, we as women so pressured to get married by age 30 and we sort rush through life in urgent need to find the one. We as women stop living life in the moment and enjoying our singledom for instead of desperately looking for the one. Your story about your own love story really proves that, Shelbee. Anyway, thank you so much for all your nice comments about my dress (it was super cheap from Charlotte Russe) and I hope you and your hubby have a fantastic Valentine’s day.

    1. Thank you so much, Nancy, for your kind words! I really love this dress, and it’s super comfortable and sexy without being too sexy! I hope you have a wonderful weekend and a Happy Valentine’s day.

  3. Gigi you look gorgeous! I can’t say this enough: you look really, really great in bright colors. The way you mixed the reds with pinks and added floral in your hair but also on your wrist, ah! I love it! And who cares if people say cold shoulders are out? They can fuck off hahahah. Fashion is…exactly what YOU make of it. It is the way we, as unique individuals, express our style and personality. That is what makes fashion so great, and so lovely to look at.
I also really love your point about looking around and being grateful to be surrounded by those that love you, even if it may not be romantic love. I think Valentines Day should embody all of the kinds of love there are, definitely not just romantic love. Hell, when I was in elementary school it was basically required for each student to go out and buy little V-Day treats for everyone in the class, and I certainly didn’t love everyone romantically.
I love the look and I really, really love the points in the post. Thank you so much for sharing, lovely! And I hope you have a wonderful Valentine’s Day!

    1. Thanks Martina for stopping by! Honestly, when it comes to trends I tend to dabble just a bit into it because trends don’t last long. The cold shoulder trend lastest all of what a year before it started to play off. However, I’m a firm believer in wearing what I want no matter what popular opinion says and decided I’m going to wear this trend until wheels fall off. LOL! I just got another cold shoulder blouse from Walmart and I have cold shoulder dress on its way from China at the moment.

And yes, single people shouldn’t just be about romantic love. It should be about ALL love, and just because you are not relationship doesn’t mean you can’t participate. I think that is what makes single people so depressed is that they are excluded from this holiday. Anyway, thank you so for your nice comment and I hope you and Joe have a fabulous Valentine’s day.
